Western Queensland 2024 State Election Scorecard released:
How do parties contesting Traeger, Gregory and Warrego stack up?

22 OCTOBER 2024

The responses are in, and the local government leaders of Western Queensland have assessed the party responses to their call to commit to Invest in the West, releasing a State Election Scorecard today.

Representing the 24 councils of Western Queensland stretching across 64% of the state, the Western Queensland Alliance of Councils (WQAC) wrote to each of the major and minor party candidates seeking a response to support its WQAC 2024 State Election Platform.

The platform identifies seven priority areas for the region - focussed on tackling its most significant barriers to growth and development as well as its ability to sustain and grow its massive contribution to the economy.

Candidates from the Liberal National Party, Queensland Labor, Katter’s Australian Party, Queensland Greens, and One Nation Party have responded with the assessment of their response forming the basis of the WQAC 2024 State Election Scorecard which is now published at www.investinwestqld.com.au/party-responses-2024.

Chair of Central Western Queensland Remote Area Planning and Development Board, Longreach Region Mayor Tony Rayner said:

“Developing the 2024 State Election Platform has been another important step for the Western Queensland Alliance of Councils as we look to put the priorities of our communities on the state and national agenda.

“We have clearly outlined our case, based on research and driven by solutions so that the major parties are now aware of the challenges and the opportunities ahead. Regardless of the outcome on Saturday, we will continue to progress these as well as emerging priorities in the interest of Western Queensland and the State.”

Chair of the South West Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils, Balonne Shire Mayor Samantha O’Toole said:

“Western Queensland contributes a massive $284,000 per capita to the economy compared to $84,000 elsewhere in Queensland. We will work closely with the government to ensure economic benefits from our hard work flow to our communities and to enhance our value proposition to the State.

“We welcome the replies and engagement during this campaigning process which has enabled us to put the issues of importance for Western Queensland in front of the major parties. We look forward to continuing to work on our priority areas and asks with all levels of government and likewise, continue to play our part to ensure state-wide priority outcomes are achieved.

Chair of the North West Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils, Etheridge Shire Mayor Barry Hughes said:

“Our platform has clearly outlined where we stand on priorities for our region, with many key issues not only affecting our communities but all Queenslanders. Whoever wins in the three Western Queensland electorates, and whichever party forms government following Saturday, the councils of the West have well and truly established an understanding of what our priorities are and how we want to work going forward.

“The time the parties have taken to respond to our platform during the campaigning period is much appreciated, providing clarity around their views and opinions and we will work with them to progress irrespective of the result.”
